books!

I got a birthday present! (does little dance cuz someone remembered)

Thank you, Vonnie and Blair!

Books! On Latin :D

(Which makes me very happy - I even cooed and danced earlier - yes, I AM a geek. I think even my Dad, the Weber-geek, was looking at me funny...)

But, they're actually quite good - very well laid out - I particularly liked the complete conjugations of verbs in Bennett.

The more books the merrier, in my world anyway.

Thanks again, Vonnie & Blair!!

me published?

Wow. I turned in a paper I was slightly embarassed about, and my prof is suggesting we try and get it published. Okay, maybe I wasn't embarassed about it - just how unpolished it was. I was actually rather pleased with the content. There's a point when you just can't stand to look at something any longer. Now, I have to track down my sources and do really scholarly foot notes and stuff.

We'll see how *this* goes.

pink panta! (& pattern)

Here's the pink panta I made today! It's my handspun - the Louet merino/ silk blend. I took the pattern I used yesterday and changed two of the ribs to cables. I really like this one! It's really soft and fitted. I'm def'ly wearing it to weaving tmrw. I've started a trend on Craftster - well, sorta... handspun pantas! I must make more!

ETA, on 7/10/07:
Now with the pattern...

One of my knitting students asked me months ago to write down my panta pattern. I had found a panta pattern online and adapted it to suit my needs during the colder months of the year. I agreed and promptly forgot. But she asked me again, and several other knitters have asked for it as well. So, here it is. I apologize for any mistakes in the math, abbreviations, etc.

Pantas are a traditional Finnish head covering and quite comfy to wear when it gets cold out. Over the past year, I have adapted the following pattern in many ways, but here are my 3 most popular (and easy to knit) versions. Please email me at fyberduck@gmail.com if you have any problems or questions. Happy knitting!

yes, cold!

Brrr.

Well, ever since I came her, Eugene has had VERY mild winters. C'mon, we barely wore more than a sweater and jacket! Now... ugh, cold! I'm having to stock up on warm clothes.

I don't doubt it's cold UP THERE - but it's usually milder down here...

Cold?

Cold? Oregon's always had cold winters, well at least for those of us up north of the 45th parallel. Speaking of which, it is snowing real, honest to goodness snow. I'm hoping to go for a drive and get some photos to share up around the mountain, but it is snowing down here in the lower valley as well. *Very* cool.

cold!!!

It is COLD outside! When did Oregon start having frigid winters? Ugh. I get used to mild winters and dispose of of my heavy duty winter clothes just before the freeze hits. Nice. At least I have TONS of alpaca and cashmere to use to keep myself warm. Sheesh. I can see that *I'll* be knitting up a storm this year.

In other news, I may just be going to New Mexico this spring! I've been invited again to go to a Southwestern Navajo Workshop in Navajo country. A friend, EweSpinster, and I are trying to arrange a road trip! More on that as it unfolds.

On knitting news, I nearly have another ear/headband done - cold! I am sooo cold - where did I put those mitts?

baby alpaca *panta*

I followed *licorice's* advice on Craftster and made a panta from my remaining baby alpaca handspun. Sorry that the pix are so blurry, but it's reallyreally difficult to take pix of the top of your own head. Very comfy! Here it is:

goldfish should be illegal and I won my Shaun Rucksack!

I've been living off of goldfish for the past few days... I swear Pepperidge Farm puts crack in their food.

Anyway, I won my Shaun Rucksack! Should arrive in a week or two... Here's a pic:

gauntlets et iPod nomen habet

Well... I have pix, and here they are. Also, Opus and her *mom* both teased me for not naming my ipod. But, now I have, and it is now dubbed "Raphael". W/o the flaming sword and halo and all :D

Anyway, here're the pix of wonderful handspun baby-alpaca warmthness. I spun 8 oz of natural coloured baby alpaca top. I made two elbow length cabled gauntlets and a ski-style lace headband. The pattern for the headband is in knitting on the edge. I have enough alpaca left to make another headband. I'm trying to decide on a pattern. Until then, I'm making one outta some painted curl yarn I bought in Venice - yumm!!!

gauntlet mitts finished!

I finished them! Yay. My camera's batteries are dead, so I'll post pix in the morning. Rejoice, in warm hands! I have, like, 2 oz of my baby alpaca left so I'm gonna make a matching headband to keep my ears warm :D

personalized ipod

I personalized my ipod, to make it more *mine* and less likely to be easily stolen. So, I got vellum swirlies and buttons. They're pink and green and match the headphones Opus found for me today! (front and back, on top of my copy of knitting over the edge)

Today was a GREAT day! We went to TWO knitting shops, and had so much fun! I also found a small hardback copy of Pride and Prejudice for $5!! And all sorts of other fun stuff, as well. And so many fashion faux pas walking around the mall, it was all I could do *not* to comment. I mean, seriously, a black crocheted lace sweater with a WHITE bra! Oh (shudder) the horror! And then there was this chick w/ a gold belt worthy of Croesos! It must have been 3 inches wide! I couldn't take my eyes off of it, it's was like watching a car crash... (shudder) ohwell.

Anyway, I am NEARLY done with my gauntlet mitts - only have two inches left! Yay (little dance). Posted by Picasa

sockies: pretties!

My friend, Opus, knit a pair of socks for me!

She wanted to try out a mosaic-celtic knot pattern... and made them...

Crazy. Masochistic!

But they fit well, and I loooove them, and they're cute and just lovely :D

No one believed me at home, at first, that they were handknit... hehehe. Wow, !I wish I was that good! Ahwell. I'll just have to keep trying.

sockies: on my feet!

Blushing Dew Drops

Here is some beaded yarn. It is hard to see the beads because it is alpaca and it likes to hide them. The little blue dots are the beads. I named this one Blushing Dew Drops. It is currently for sale at Knot Another Hat. Posted by Picasa

Plum Fairy Fizz

Here is my pretty yarn that is colonial wool and one ball of Fizz Stardust. I named the yarn Plum Fairy Fizz. It is currently for sale at Knot Another Hat. Posted by Picasa

This is the bag for my mother for Christmas. It hasn't been felted yet, but I should have pics in a couple of days. Posted by Picasa

Sockies!

I am *such* a nut. So I'm knitting my socks, right? And, like, what do I do? I turn the socks and knit them inside out! What a NOOB!! So I ripped out my knitting and I'm starting again. But this time is much better since 1. both sets of needles are the same size (as in length of cord and needle) so that knitting is less cumbersome, and 2. I have an awesome kacha-kacha counter. *drool*

WIP: gauntlet mitts continued

Well, I'm *nearly* to the thumb gussets now. Maybe I can have them done tmrw. Opus is coming to town and hopefully we can get together. I get to start cooking in a couple of hours. Yummy food. Hmm, Jumanji is on.

I am such a spoiled brat

But completely unrepentent too.

I just got back from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for the 3rd time. I have half my songs transfered to my ipod, and it hit me. I am reallyreally spoiled.

Oh, well. At least I know it. Though, I really don't want to change.

I can't wait for Thanksgiving tmrw! We have prime rib, and taters, and asparagus, and petites pois, and pies, and yummies! OOOOh. Can't wait! Mum's even making cranberry sauce from scratch.

Now I'm hungry...

ipod has landed

Lovely. Dad called me in the middle of class to notify me of it's arrival. Damn, that was embarassing. I mean... c'mon, in the middle of a presentation no less. I'm charging it right now.

I gave up on classes today, when the girl next to me knocked my boiling-hot apple cider into my lap. Fuuun. I just decided to come how and give up on academia for the day. It's not meant to be. I need to finish my mitts...

paper done!

Finally! 6 hours later, it is DONE! 9 pages w/ an additional works cited. Oh, relief. I just have to print it tmrw, before class. Sleepy time now.

I'm an angel!

Well... a "swap angel". But, hey, that's better than nothing!

Yay! Ithnkuno got my angel box I sent her. I was really worried it wouldn't get there. The Postmistress seemed really frazzled that day... But, it got there, and all to the good.

And, good karma is always good. I think I shall sign up for a swap now. I have to see what are up right now. Anything but holiday related. Eeek.

Craftster rocks, by the way.

And, I am totally procrastinating on writing my 10-pager...

WIP: finger/wrist warmers

(WIP = "work in progress")

Gawd my hands are cold! I think they're turning blue. Anyway, here's what I'm working on right now... Tipless gauntless, I have 4" currently (need 12):

Can't wait until they're done - brr.

non sequitor

For god's sake, can someone tell me why my strawberry-flavored dum-dum is blue and pink?

I won my shaun!

Yay! Today is a good day. I won my Shaun the Sheep Plushy (from Wallace and Grommit) on ebay. He came to £7.10 GBP, or $12.51. Yaaaaay. I love Shaun, he's the coolest sheepy ever.

Aaaand, I got an A+ on my costume history midterm and an A on my art history quiz. Here's a pic of Shaun:

Hopefully my good trend will follow thru mythology this afternoon...

"guest commentary" huh?

A response letter I wrote to my campus newspaper was published today under "guest commentary". Huh. And, here I thought I was a student... and on campus (snicker). Ohwell. Here's the link:

Headscarf ban was a fair ruling

Life is bizarre, sometimes.

beer cozy, anyone?

Every once in a while, I'll get a male knitting student. They're usually quite keen and fast to learn. And they can make the wackiest things. I have one who's been in lately with his girlfriend. Guess what he made today at the VKW?

A pink, acrylic, beer-cozy.

I suppose it's better than a tea cozy, but I'm completely baffled as to how someone would think of such a creation. Funky.

Anyway, I got another inch on my sweater done, and a chemo cap done. Ooooh, Rome is on.

prep for grad school is exhausting

I've been trying to clear out all my oversized crap to get ready for the big move, and it's tiring. I sold my big loom, and hopefully it will stay sold. I sold my Beka loom before that, but now the buyer wants to return it. What a pain. I'll have to relist it and everything. I know it works, so obviously the person who bought it needs more experience weaving. And now I still need to get rid of a table loom, my giant loft bed, and some other stuff.

Hmm, good news is that Harry Potter still rocked the second time around.

Oh! I ordered my iPod last night, black and 30 GB. personalized, too.

Hmm. I need to start my apps soon. I already asked my profs for letters of recommendation. Need to make a list and get to it, after this week - 10 page paper due this week on the history of costume. Oy!

Oh, blast! I'm late for guild

loomy no more

We we traded the loom today. I finally have room again. I am so sleepy. I finally got a copy of "The History of Knitting" and "Knitting Over the Edge" which has a really cute colour-pattern with sheepies. I tried to go to L'Occitaine while in Portland, but couldn't find it! Ohwell. We left, and drove thru endless fog. I am so tired. I'll update later.

Here is a picture of my wristlets that I designed and knit using Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino yarn. They are for my grandmother who has rheumatoid arthritis. Posted by Picasa

sweater update

In other news, aside from HP's fabulousness! I have 13 inches on my sweater done! Yay (does a little dance). I am, actually, supposed to be studying for a midterm I have in... oh, 42 minutes. But writing is so much more fun. Knitting would be even MORE fun. I am totally making up the pattern for my sweater as I go. It might turn out alright, who knows? Need to study (guilt is setting in).

Potter Rules!

Harry Potter kicks ass, once again!

I totally ditched Costume History and Art History to see "The Goblet of Fire" this morning, with my *MUM*. Talk about addicts.

It was absolutely fabulous! They managed to get the World Cup and all 3 triwizard tasks in w/o cutting out too much of the school year. While the story was adapted a little, I thought it was the truest of the movies to the books so far.

And, thankfully, not half so sacchrine.

My only complaints are who they casted as Dumbledore and Krum. Dumbledore was too excitable this time, and Krum was too pretty. What happened to "hook-nosed" and "duck-footed"? Ohwell. The other actors were parfait. The "Golden Trio" in particular gave a wonderful performance.

It was definitely 2 and a half hours of magic and mystery and fun. I'm going to see it again tonight. Yes, my parents and I are HP addicts. We don't deny this.

But, if you're a stalwart HP fiction fan, I think you'll find this the best movie of the 4 so far.

Ohh... and as a textile fiend, I totally want to steal half the costumes. Seriously.

Jane Austin blasphemy!

Okay. I admit that I knew it was coming. I was, I thought, prepared. But, I wasn't. Who would have DARED to mess up the perfection that is Austen?

OH!

KIERA-fricking-KNIGHTLEY as Lizzie???

The shame! The horror!

And, the dialogue! "You have bewitched me, body and soul"???

I want to cry.

There should be LAWS against ruining such lovely works like Austen's. I should start a society. To protect great literary works. Like Austen. Specifically Austen.

But, until then. I have done something to make myself feel better. Now, normally, I am a fan of Kiera. But I shall never forgive her for attempting the role of Lizzie. Ever. A good actor knows when they aren't fit for a role. And... well, if ever there was a discrepancy... (shudder) it's here. Ugh! Poor Jane, she must be so embarassed to have this movie attached to her good name...

Pride and Prejudice has been my favorite book since I was 11. I read it one night, when my father gave me a copy thinking it would put me to sleep. Ha! I was up until 3 am, finishing it. I reread it several times a year. I can recite entire dialogues. Hell, I had the first page memorized by the time I was 12... which was a group joke in middle school.

What Hollywood has done this time is unforgivable. They're plagarised a classic and slandered it, at the same time.

And, may I just finish with... who the hell did they think they were, trying to improve upon Colin Firth as Darcy?

attack of the ufo's!

ufo = unfinished object... too many taking over my house

Soooo bored. Office hours. All study and no play. I have so many projects I want to work on. There's this reallyreally cool shrug on craftster that I wanna make: apixiegirl's handspun shrug

and then I have my two sweaters and a pair of socks and a chemo cap and wrist warmers and I don't even want to think of what else.

chem coming up. hahaha. I got a chemo cap done there yesterday... maybe I'll get somewhere on my sweater...

TIME TO CELEBRATE!!

Yesyesyesyesyes!

I sold my loom! I can pay my tuition!

Yay! Gonna get it outta my bedroom on Saturday!

(dancing a little jig)

What *will* I do with my new space????

(continues dancing)

that's it! I'm moving to the desert!

Ugh! After 3 days (!), the legs of my jeans are still damp! How is that possible? I miss snow, instead of endless rain.

shetland skeins

Here's the skeins I got done. Overdyed Moorit Shetland. Yummy. I might get my sweater done this week... What a thought!

blessedly numb

Well, I've returned from my academic counseling session. I missed Chem because it took so long. The good news is that I can take all the courses I want and they'll finish off my degree requirements. The bad news is that I can take all the courses I want and will have to find a way to schedule 20 credit hours into my life next term. I may as well reserve my straight-jacket now.

I can't think at all right now. I was going to try and get a jump-start on my Costume History term project, but I'm just so... blank. Hm. I need to make a list of terms to research. But, there's really no point. I have to meet Emily for dinner and class in 20 minutes. Oy. I have to be intelligent and stuff soon - otherwise I'll weave my bag to itself, which would reallyreally suck.

I got 6 oz of my over-dyed Shetland done last night. I will *finally* be able to finish my sweater!! Maybe I can have pix up by the end of the week. I haven't done any knitting in so long. Eugh. We spent the morning scouring the house - making it fit for human habitation again. Then I ran a whole bunch of rather pointless errands. Now, here I sit in my Guild's office killing time. What a strange life. I mean, honestly, how many people have the luxury of getting nothing done all the time? I feel like I rarely achieve anything society values - good grades are nice, but are hardly tangible. And knitting is a craft.

American luxury is awe inspiring sometimes, when I think about it. We have so much, and rarely realize it. I mean, c'mon, electricity is just over 100 years old and we can't live without it. Computers are even younger and they're our lives. It's just amazing how fast life moves, but how little I seem to get done.

Maybe I'll achieve something tomorrow.

the stars have aligned

Or something.

I am completely screwwed no matter which way I try to arrange my classes for next term. I have 2 classes that I am required to take, and they're at the same time! And, to try and exchange them, they interact with 2 more classes that are required! Why? Because the Kosmos are against me, or something!

I hope my department will let me exchange a seminar class for a the standard In Translation one. Even then, I'll still be at 20 creds, and probably will go outta my mind. So far I'm signed up for:
Art History 422: Aegean Art (which I've waited 2 YEARS! for...)
Art History 323: Art of Ancient Rome
Classics 407 Seminar: Historiography
Chemistry 222: General Chemistry

And I still haven't signed up for my Museology course! Eugh! I'm totally freaked as to what I should take. I need to talk to my advisor. That'll work. I think she has office hours today... hmm. I have 1/2 an hour to make it before Chem. I think I'll run over there for advice.

mmmmm, knitting books

Lav'sheep:
Debbie Bliss is lovely. Sometimes she's impractical, but it's still fun. Have you seen her stuff in Interweave Knits?

OMG! I totally forgot! Were you the person who mentioned that they(she) wanted Bliss' "Celtic Knits"??? I found a used copy at Powells and nearly bought it, cause I knew someone was looking for it... But couldn't remember! And then I was *rudely* dragged out, before I could decide. ((MALES!))

Ohwell, I hope you didn't, then. I'll definitely put some of Bliss' books on the list. I love her cardies...

Knitting Books

Hmmm....there are so many options. I haven't bought a book in awhile, but I can recommend a few:

  • Anything Debbie Bliss: Her stuff is really awesome and really easy to knit. I especially love her beginner baby knits book because it teaches how to knit and has really awesome patterns that can easily be adapted to more difficult patterns for color or cabling. The only downside to her books are her stuffed animals, because she tends to write her patterns like how a person sewing would make them and the poor little animals become far too complicated for their own good.
  • I really love the new Dale of Norway Baby book. I haven't tried any of the patterns, but it is beautiful to look at and is very good for inspiration. Unfortunately, it is rather an expensive book and it does have baby things on size 0 and it would cost over $50 to make a single baby sweater. I love it, but I know it is impractical.
  • I recently relooked at my Christmas Stockings book by Interweave. I think it is really pretty and has patterns for all levels of knitters. A class that was taught down at the yarn shop was really popular that was all on knitting designer Christmas Stockings out of leftover stash. I got out my stocking book to "borrow" a design out of it for my wristlets I'm making for my grandmother. I showed it to Sarah and she has promised to stock it.
I can't think of any other books at the moment. I will have my eye out, but I really love individual patterns now too. Knot Another Hat carries a lot of individual patterns and Knitty is also fun to look at. I like things that inspire me and give me ideas to design my own patterns. I hope this list has helped a little.

honor preserved!

I sold my Beka loom on ebay as part of my effort to clean out my stash before grad school. But I didn't realise that the loom had a faulty tensioning knob. Ugh! I found out after the loom had sold, for $80 above my estimate.. eeek. So, I offered to make a new set with my dad. Here they are, with one of the originals to the far left. I rather like mine better - yay!

Anorexic Knitters?

Does anyone else want to take this stray home and *feed* her?... From Vogue Knitting Fall05

The American/ British anorexia trend seems to be invading everything these days. It was bad enough when there was Heroin Couture, but now... ugh.

The fact that people are buying into this unhealthily skinny look (read: starved, malnourished, or just plain sticklike) really bothers me. I belonged to a women's group last year. Half of the girls in it had eating disorders. They monitored everything they ate down to the calorie. It was frightening. Like every other American female, I can obssess over my weight - but I try to focus on other things, like knitting. But that's becoming ever more impossible.

I've noticed a trend in knitting books and magazines now - more and more slender sizing. Impossibly slender sizing. If an "extra-large" large sweater measures at the BUST to 40 inches, what size does that make half the women I know? I don't suggest you answer that.

40 inches? It sounds innocent, until you take into consideration that to make a sweater that fits you have to subtract an average of 4 inches off the finished size. Or, 2 inches for a fitted sweater. So, here's the math: If your sweater is 40 inches at the bust, your chest can only be at it's largest point 38 inches. And that's if you don't want to wear something under the sweater. Yeah, that's gonna happen with a wool cardi. I remember being told in Health Class, in high school, that the average bra size is 38-B. Unh-huh. So, what does that mean for those of us that are "average"?

Doesn't this bother anyone? I reallyreally love many modern, funky patterns. But I don't want to have to adapt them so I can make a sweater that fits! This is time I reallyreally don't have.

Ever since my teen years I have not been able to find shirts that fit me in most stores. I usually have to get shirts that are either too tight (in women's) or too big (in men's). Fine, I've accepted that clothing designers are sick people that have an unhealthy obssession with little boys. Whatever. I thought, though, that by branching into knitting my own sweaters I could evade this problem. Apparently not.

So, on behalf of all buxom women and other curvy individuals, I protest the anorexic trend knitting patterns are following. I know I can't be the only woman out there. Maybe I'll write my own book: Voluptuous Knits, or something. Any takers?

Re: Twisted Sisters Explained

My puter must be acting up, because your post totally didn't show up until this morning! Ack. Otherwise I would have responded before posting...

To make us both happy, I've listed it under "ADVANCED". I just don't think it's a book for newbies or the light of heart.

Hmm. I'm trying to organize my opinion. There are several things about Twisted Sisters that bother me. One is that it's touted as the book to learn to spin/knit your own socks. I don't think it is. There's no adaptation for men's socks, which require narrower ankles, or sizing for babies. I guess it bothered me that it was almost incomplete. It seemed a bit rushed and garbled. Her description of how to do a Kitchner Stitch is confusing. I prefer Ann Budd's. No, it's not at all like Stitch'n'Bitch - oh, . I'm just a bit disappointed by it, to be honest, I have such a vaulted opinion of Vogel's work - and I thought this book fell short. Everyone thinks of it as the sock bible, but I thought she could have done so much more - with better sizing descriptions and fuller charts, etc. I also would have liked her to write out the patterns completely (tho this might have been the editors) and not have to flip back and forth to find a heel and toe pattern.

I'll admit, I *was* inspired by the pictures. But, my approval for the book lessened over the past 6 months, where I've had numerous knitters/Guild members approach me with questions after looking thru it.

And while I admit that publishers are entitled to make mistakes, there IS a limit. If it'll take them one month longer to get the bugs out, I'll happily wait. I'm sick of all the mistakes. I spend $30 a book, on average. I think I'm entitled to something I can reference, without having to check the WEB to make sure it's right! It's just soooo frustrating. I'm mostly thinking of Stitch'n'Bitch here, tho. If they had *taken* that extra month, maybe fewer people would give up in frustration, or I wouldn't have to *rewrite* patterns every week for people to use.

Anyway, if you have other book suggestions for the good, the bad, the ugly - or just advanced, lemme know! Lists are FUUUUN.

The last midterm!

Wow! I survived it! I don't have to think about anything for a few days, thank g-d.

On to knitting, then, mwahaha. Weaving tomorrow night... and hmm, I have an urge to crochet more jewelry, yummy. If I do, then I *must* post.

GTG, lunch and art hist.

Finally! An ATTRACTIVE Granny-square!

I made this necklace today at a workshop held by my Guild, taught by Marleda. We taught participants how to crochet wire with beads. I chose to avoid beads this time, because I was using a lower gauge wire - 24 gauge sterling silver. Oy! My hands hurt soooo much by the end of the workshop!

But, one of our regulars, Diane, taught me how to make a Granny-square, cuz I wanted to try making pendants and such. I'm rather pleased by how it turned out. I used an H-hook. Everyone had really lovely jewelry by the end! it was exhausting, but fun. GTG study for a midterm. I'll put up another pic, too. Posted by Picasa

This Is Me

(I'm double posting between blogs. So bleh!)

I did some research today on hearing loss. Amazingly enough, they've got a term for what I've got: single sided deafness (in the UK) and unilateral hearing loss (in the US, although this seems to be more of a concern for dog owners for some reason).

Here are some links for those who might like to know more, in order of most to least general:
Hope that helps y'all understand a little more.

Twisted Sisters Explained

It is definately a book for expert fibers people. It covers everything that a person with a fibers background needs to know. It doesn't require that you have size four yarn because she has a whole section on designing socks for your own feet, including gauging your yarn from WPI to stitches per inch. The pattern that she uses in there is an example of what she uses for her feet. The reason why it does not cover mini circulars (is there a book that covers mini circulars?) or two circulars is that the book was written before two circulars had become popular. The book can't exactly change with time like the internet. It is a comprehensive book on a number of aspects, from sheep to socks.

I really love her book and though I do believe that you have the right to believe differently I do think that it is unfair to put it on the same list as Stitch n Bitch and others of that sort as being unrecommended. Besides most books and patterns now have errata that fix mistakes that were accidentally put into them. Stitch n Bitch does also and fixes minor details. Since I have been down at the yarn shop I hear Sarah tell people all the time to check out websites for books or that patterns that she sells individually often have to have extra things printed out in order to make them work. That's why it is always important to check out the book's or the publisher's website before starting a pattern. This is just my opinion, but I think that it might be important to realize for beginners and all knitters alike.

My hat

is coming along wonderfully. I've got about 26 knit up now, so I think I'm back to where I was before I decided it was too small and added another 8 stitches to it. Now I need to get cracking on it, since I got a hair cut today. I need to be ready for the cold weather.

Whirlpool Day!

What a day!!!

I have been running all day! First a Crockpot Dyeing workshop, which was lovely btw, and I'll have more photos up soon. I did the Whirlpool palette. On 12 oz of ultrafine Merino (19 microns! droooool). I also tried some raspberry on my angelwings(50/50 cotton/silk) when I got home.

You'll love this method, Lav'sheep!!!! All you do is fill the crockpot with water 2/3 up and then squish as much wool as you can in (about 8 oz - I painted the other, paler, 4) and then pour the powdered dye in, 1/2 teaspoon or more - in as many colours as you want! It's soooo cool! No measuring or anything! Yummmms.

Then, I went to lunch with EweSpinster and then she came over and I helped her clean a fleece. And, then after dinner, we hauled ass to Ben Franklin - cuzzzz, they were having a SALE!!!!! YES! ((does a little dance))

Guess what I bought! Guess!

I got Vogue Knitting for 40% off --> $23 instead of $39! Yay!

And some other goodies as well. Mwahaha. Bless E/S for giving me tha coupon...

Now, I am sitting (blessed be!) and watching FullMetal Alchemist with my bro. We're on episode 42. Well, HE is. I'm still on ep. 24 or something. I totally missed the start of the Ishbalan War. Let's not even go there... Oh, such tragic music Anyway. Long day.

And tomorrow promises to continue this trend. I promised to teach a girl from the workshop today how to spin worsted yarn. Eugh. First I'll actually have to remember how to! Then, I can do that. Maybe, if I'm lucky, she'll shpw up NEXT week.

Marleda's Crocheted Metal Jewelry workshop tis omotrow. I need to get my materials together. Oy. Anyway. I think that's enough of an update, tonight.

Re: Twisted Sisters

I never said I hated it! Ever. I just don't recommend it for beginning or intermediate knitters or spinners. I think Vogel's expectations are a bit high - handspun yarn knit on size 4's! Sheesh, most spinners don't spin that fine. Also, she doesn't give explicit directions for how to adapt an hourglass heel or toe-socks. I used to recommend it to spinners/knitters, but they always have questions after reading it! Poor Emily could not figure out an hourglass heel. And, I don't even think Vogel covered heel alternatives - which I actually prefer, now. She also didn't cover mini circulars or the double circular method - I think Vogel is a bit stuck in her ways. Which is fine for her, but it doesn't expose readers to other alternatives that might work better for them.

I also read, on many of the spinning boards I subscribe to, that many spinners have had problems with her patterns. The heel, in particular. There're a lot of adaptations to her patterns online. I think the real problem is one that Interweave REALLY needs to address: they rush books to publishing. I don't think the book was edited well enough, and it can be reallyreally confusing. They ALWAYS have a list of OOPS! on their website or in their magazines. I notice multiple misspellings and grammatical problems in some of their other books as well.

For socks, I recommend Budd's The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns. It covers infant sizes to adult men's in gauges 5 - 9. It's more adaptive, I think. But that's just me. I never said it was bad or that I hated it. I just don't recommend it for its diffuculty rating.

I dooo love the dyeing section in it. Lovely. I just think the knitting and spinning sections need to be rewritten before it can really be considered an all encompassing sock workbook. But that's my humble opinion.

Twisted Sisters

How can you hate Twisted Sisters? It is simply ridiculous. It is for experienced knitters, not namby-pamby newbies. I love how it has everything from dyeing, to spinning, to knitting. So pretty! Any experienced knitter can read it. How can you hate it so?

Pobre Tu!!

Poor Dragon. Technology can certainly suck. Kinda funny that my blog's behaving for you.

I dunno if you subscribe to Knitty's mailing list, but these are the *funniest* cards ever, for knitters, anyway: "Something Special For the Holidays". Parfait, non?

Hmm, have over 8" knit on the back of my pink sweater. I think I'm going to go for a drapey boat-neck. Any opinions? Baby-pink and gauzy - cotton and polymid... Yummy mix, soooo soft. I never saw Lavendarsheep's finished sox...

I still haven't written out that pattern, for the Faux-Bennetton Wrap. Promised I'd have it up by tonight. My bad. Midterms week has taken my life from my control. Still have one more left...

Must... Resist...

Urge to kill my webhost. Or blogger... I can't decide which. All I know is that I cannot post a thing between blogger and freeshell. But blogger and blogspot works fine, of course. Sometimes technology just gets in my way *too* much.

Just sharing the pain. Do you feel it? Okay, okay, stop feeling it. I'm going to burn and boot into a new version of Knoppix to cure my ills. At least until I decide to go muck it up for my purposes.

knitting withdrawl

I haven't had time to knit in... 2 days? Eugh! Too many midterms and stuff. The Chem exam yesterday was harrowing. Dear g-d, I hope I passed!

I want to get this bloody sweater done - as I have another still on the needles and enough yarn/ wool in the wings for another 1/2 dozen sweaters! I also need to make my mom one. That should be interesting.

I reallyreally have to start looking at grad school apps now. Blech. I hope some school somewhere accepts me (ha!). Not feeling too confident currently. Ohwell.

Need to go send a package off... Earning good karma.

think pink!

I was knitting in chemistry yesterday - who needs to take notes, anyway? - and noticed something freaky. The sweater I was knitting matched my courdy tracksuit *exactly*. They were the exact same colour of baby pink. Too weird. I got some funny looks, too. Wow, I *am* a pink addict.

But, despite this, I got 6 more inches knitted!! I just might have the sweater done in a week or two...

rejection sucks

Got my rejection email from Teach For America today. Lame. I really kinda wanted to get in, too. It seems so worthwhile. I'm really tired and depressed cuz I'm sick so I'm probably feeling that, too. This means that I *have* to go to grad school now.

evil, maniacal, little b---

brother.

That little bugger was watching *my* DVD's without waiting for me to get back from classes. Arg.

Test today! Fun. Harhar. Test tomorrow. And test on Monday. I sure know how to live.

Got an inch done on my sweater yesterday. GTG study.

So much to do, so little time

Ack! I *have* to do my Art History homework and "revising" as it were. Have a quiz tomorrow. I got an A on the last one, but it never hurts to study. Then I have a Chem test on Thursday and my second Costume Hist miderm on Monday! Not fair! All back-to-back. I swear they plan it that way.

Aaand, I also promised to have my sweater pattern up by the end of the week, eeek! And I wanted to knit another, to make sure I had the pattern right. Blech.

Then I have to finish my yarn for my Shetland cardi sleeve and collar! It's so close to being done, it's actually embarassing. I have half the 2nd sleeve knitted, and 6 oz of wool left to spin. I could probably do it in a day, if I'd just *do* it.

And **sigh**. I finally get my Fullmetal Alchemist DVD's and I don't have time to watch them! They're so much fun! I think I like it better than Inuyasha and Witch Hunter Robin! It's such a funky little show. My brother and I got thru the first of 6 discs and 2 episodes into the 2nd disc. We just watched it back-to-back for, like, 3 hours. hehehe **blush**. Was a *lot* of fuuun. Found the cutest pic from the show, from an episode I saw last night:

That's all for now. I just hope I can get everything done!

fullmetal affliction

Got my DVD's today. Watching them with my brother. Funfunfun.

sleepy head

Is it normal to want to take a nap in the middle of the day? I can barely keep my eyes open... eugh. Two more classes left! (whine)

waistcoat or jacket?

Just got done felting my swatches for a new project. I'm trying to decide between making a Colonial/pre-Revoluntionary War style waistcoat or a full-length jacket. Any opinions?

I have 38oz of fine shetland wool, which knits up/ felts to apprx 3 stitches per inch, at a thickness of 1/8 of an inch. I rather like the idea of a waistcoat, but worry that the "cloth" will be too thick.

Here it is dry and complete. I just got tired of trying to boil it, which I will never try again, and threw it in the wash. The color left the novelty yarn and overdyed everything kinda a green color, which made me very sad. The yarn goes at an angle because it is hand-spun. I still love it a lot though, and it makes a wonderful project bag.  Posted by Picasa
